Frequently Asked Questions

Why the group is needed?

The group is vital as there is no other group of its kind locally which encompasses all forms of disabilities and special needs, from Down’s syndrome, Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome to ADHD and microcephaly

There are ‘condition specific’ support groups for some parents to attend but these are some 20 miles away. There are also many parents whose dependants have undiagnosed conditions who are not currently able to access any support.

It was acknowledged that with a recognised condition the parents benefited from contacting the relevant support group but there remained a sense of isolation within the local community. Our parents have a need to ensure that our children remain part of and are active members of the Mourne Area.

How can I join the group?

Membership of SNAP is open to families in the Mourne Area who have a child/children with Special needs, whether a physical or a learning difficulty.

We currently have a database listing all our members contact details and make contact by a variety of methods. Mailshots, emails and text messages have all proved very effective. With the addition of our website we are able to keep all our members well informed.

Our group has been advertised in the local press and posters placed in appropriate venues such as the Primary Care Health Centre, Chemists and Dental practices. A mobile number has been made available for anyone to phone or text to ensure that their details are placed on our contact list.
